Gum Grafting

How gum grafting can help you

Gum recession is a common dental problem that affects between 4 and 12% of adults. Because this often happens gradually over time, you may not even notice until it becomes a severe problem. Gum grafting is a procedure that can help add tissue back to your gums and protect them against further damages. Dr. Omid Termechi is proud to serve residents throughout the Astoria, NY area, and give them a healthy and attractive smile through gum grafting.

Gum grafting can help solve a variety of issues including:

  • Exposed Roots: If your gums recede too far, they may eventually expose the tooth’s root. When this happens, you can be extremely sensitive to eating hot and cold foods. Whether it’s enjoying soup on a cold winters night like we often see here in Astoria, or eating an ice cream cone during the summer months, an exposed root will make eating these foods nearly impossible.

  • Tooth Loss: If your gum recession continues, it can even cause tooth loss. Without the gum giving extra support for your teeth, they are more susceptible to falling out. Gum grafting can stop the recession and create another protective layer for your teeth.

  • Improved Smile: If you find yourself smiling less because you are self-conscious about the way your teeth and gums look, gum grafting can help. This procedure will give your smile a more natural look and help you feel more secure about the way you look and feel.

What to expect after gum grafting:

After gum grafting surgery you can expect to be able to go home, but will have to take it easy and get some much-needed rest. You may experience some slight pain and discomfort, depending on how much skin was taken from your palate. You will be able to take some pain medication and will have to eat soft foods for a week or two.

The most important thing is to not brush or floss the gum line until completely healed. Using special mouthwash will help control plaque buildup while your mouth heals. To learn more about the entire procedure and what to expect, please contact Dr. Omid Termechi today to schedule an appointment.
